AMAZONAS |
General informationThe department of the Amazon is located in the extreme south of Colombia, in the east bordered by Brazil and in the south by Peru. It is also known as the " green lung “ of the earth, biggest coherent rain forest area of the world, distinguishes itself by a biodiversity rarely found in other places. As an ecosystem, the tropical coral reefs with her huge number of life forms, can be absolutely compared to the Amazon. Without doubt a place which emits an indescribable magic and fascination on the visitor and earns, therefore, also the status as a unique tourist destination. In the colombian Amazon we find Leticia the capital of this region, from there it is possible to visit Peru as well as Brazil on a one day trip. 85 kms of Leticia and on the border to Peru lies the town Puerto Nariño, formed by the Indianer-ethnics Tikunas, Yaguas and Cocamas. 20 minutes away, on the Tarapoto lake, Amazon-river dolphins (Inia geoffrensis) may be observed. The national park Amacayacu is located 2 boat hours from the capital. The park may be visited for an entry fee and offers hiking, night canoe journeys, fishing and a Lodge with room for 45 guests. The average temperature in this region is 27°C / 81°F. The high water or rain season lasts from January to June and the time with low water or dry season from July to November. The Amazon can be visited all year around, but still the dry season is the prefered season. Hiking trips are substituted according to season with canoe journeys or vice versa. Fauna and Flora: Its estimated that around one quarter of the animal and plant species of the world have their home in the Amazon basin. Here rules an enourmous biodiversity from which one only a small part has been investigated. Because of the darkness of the forest ground and the limited food offer, some animals adapt to the rain forest with strangest forms and behaviours. Big parts of the Amazon are rivers or flood areas. Only few animals like the tapir, the anteater or hunters like the Ocelot and the Jaguar are land living. The Amazon accomodates more than 2000 fish species, more than in all rivers of the world together. And also the vegetation of the jungle could not be more diverse. Everything is almost represented; Savannas, marsh and mangroves woods, mountain- and dry woods. 25,000 orchid kinds are found in the Amazon. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR YOUR AMAZONAS TRIP:
