General informationAntioquia is one of Colombia´s 32 departments. It´s got an area of 63.612 km² and it is located to the Northwest . It is one of the country´s oldest territorial entities. The department is divided into 125 towns . Its capital is Medellín ; Colombia´s second city in terms of size and economy. The department´s geography offers a wonderful territory for many recreational and touristic activites. It has got the Western and Central mountain ranges , valleys, a sea , rivers , plateaus, moors, marshes, and forests. No doubt , it´s a paradise for adventure sports. There is a very interesting ethnic mix in Antioquia. One might find people from coastal areas , from the savannas, people with an African or indigenous ancestry, and of course one will always find the predominant “Paisas” who represent 90 percent of the department´s population. Paisas are a very traditionalist and religious kind of people who are used to hard work in the countryside and who have a touch of the Colombian “cowboy”. Medellín is a modern and thriving city which reflects the hard working spirit of “paisas” . Its people are proud of their city , their heritage and their metro. Medellín is at 1538 meters above sea level. It has got an approximate population of 3.312.000 inhabitants. s Crossed by the Medellin River , it is located in the country´s Northwest, right in the middle of the Aburra Valley in the Central Mountain Range . During the 1980´s , Medellín city went through an extreme social crisis which prevented it from being considered a top touristic destination , and to make things even worse , The North American and European Media rated it as one of the most violent cities in the world.
