PROVIDENCE ISLAND

“The divine providence” is in extension the second largest island in the San Andrés archipelago , which is composed by San Andrés , Providencia , and Santa Catalina islands and the Rocador, Quita sueño , and Serrana Keys.
Providencia and its neighboring island Santa Catalina embody the concept of quiet, peaceful tourism , far from the noisy outer world. Its mountain-filled geography and its abundant vegetation reinforce the landscape´s powerful natural charm. Providencia, a magical island that fulfills every expectation you might have from paradise.

Extension: 17 sq.km

Location : In the West portion of the Caribbean , 775 km ( 480 nautical miles) North West off the country´s Atlantic coast and 220km (140 nautical miles ) off the East coast of Nicaragua.

Climate: Warm , 27° C on average, with the rainy season between the January and June.

Fauna: The great coral reefs surrounding the island shelter an immense multitude of marine species , in addition to the vegetation provided by the mangrove swamps at the Nationalpark.

INFORMATION FOR SCUBA DIVERS

Diving and snorkeling are one of the island´s greatest attractions , as a result of the sea´s turquoise tones around the coral reefs and island walls .

The best time of year for Scuba diving is between February and May when there is the mating season for Green Turtles.

Water temperature: 27-28 ° C

Dive spots: there are 30 different spots , 10-15 minutes by ship from the island , with depths ranging from 6 to 40 meters. There are walls , coral reefs and a sunken ship.

Dive schedule: Double tank in the morning between 9.30am and 1.30pm, afternoon diving on request

Tanks: 200 Bar/3000 PSI INT (bring your DIN Adapter)

Nitrox: available, additional cost per dive

Decompression chamber: San Andres Islas, Hospital Timothy Britton

TRAVEL RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Please bring Dive light, Dive computer, Logbook and certification card. Allowed 10 kg luggage and 5 kg hand luggage from San Andres to Providencia, some baggage can be left for safekeeping in Bogota / Medellin.
  • Mosquito repellent, solar-screen/block, light comfortable clothes, some sneaker or traveling shoes for the excursions.
